CAMSAIL is a sailing club which meets monthly from October to March to enjoy a wide range of
talks by members and invited speakers, and an opportunity to socialise in a nautical
atmosphere (albeit in central Cambridge!). There is an annual subscription of £20 (first meeting free).
In the October meeting we will hear from Cathy Shelbourne about ‘The Riddle of the Sands’.
Maritime historian Cathy Shelbourne and writer Erskine Childers share a common ancestor. In this talk, Cathy explores the Childers family tree and their connections with Cambridgeshire – and traces Erskine’s career from sailor to spy to author of one of the most famous sailing stories of all time, ‘The Riddle of the Sands’, set in the shifting sands of the German Frisian Islands before the outbreak of the First World War.
We meet at 19.30 for a 19.45 talk start. The bar is open in advance of the talk for general socialising.
